Little Women (2019)

Little Women (2019)

Trailer

Little Women (2019) is an adaption to the book written by Louisa May Alcott. It’s a beloved tale that has been told time and time again, yet each film is very different from another.

This movie details of sisterhood and the trials and tribulations that follow. It surrounds itself around the character Jo March and her three other sisters. The story is from Jo’s perspective as she submitting a short story (which happens to be the movie) to a condescending male publisher. Because of his rather annoyingly constructive feedback, Jo struggles to tell her story while pleasing him, and the story proceeds.

It’s a fast pace film that teeters back and forth between the past and present. Each sisters personality shines through and often times, clash and flow between the others. The movie shows fantastic character development. I am certain you’ll be moved by the story and invested in each of the four sisters.

Greta Gerwig, the the director, masterfully conducted a film of humor and shows a woman’s modern perspective on society’s oppressive normatives during those times. While the story is vintage, the new movie carries a contemporary energy that feels relatable to modern times.

Pros: It’s a feel good movie that will make you laugh, cry, and feel all of the emotions.

Bonus – favorite quote: “Women, they have minds and they have souls as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition and they’ve got talent as well as just beauty. I am so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for. I’m so sick of it.”

The Good Place (2016-2020)

The Good Place (2016-2020)

The Good Place follows Eleanor Shellstrop, who has miraculously ended up in the “good place.” She feels like there has been a mistake since her life was filled will sin and selfishness. The show follows her journey and how she adapts to this new world.

It’s a hilarious show. It’s funny without being offensive. The show goes on a wild rollercoaster of events that you might not expect. It’s a show that keeps you interested, especially in quarantine. The Good Place has four seasons and a lot of material to watch.

Pros: An excellent story – super funny too.

Cons: N/A

Love Island

Love Island

Ok – so it’s not a movie, but it’s all I have been watching.

I have never been super into The Bachelor, or any other dating shows, but Love Island is a game-changer. There’s an even number of men and women at the beginning of the show, and the show brings new people in and kicks the least popular couples out. The cycle pretty much repeats the entire show. There’s a UK version, which is the original. I know that there is an Australian version which is also very good, but the American version is not!

This show is for someone really wanting to binge watch a long show. Each episode is almost an hour, and there are 50 episodes.

Pros: It’s a fun show with a lot of drama and jokes.

Cons: It’s not everyones cup of tea. Can be very long.

Rainman Twins (2008)

Rainman Twins (2008)

Rainman Twins (2008) was a movie I found perchance while in quarantine. I’ve been feeling rather desperate for something new and different. And let me tell you, this movie does not disappoint.

It tells the story of twins Flo and Kay, whom are autistic savants. They’re extraordinary people – they have the ability to remember everything that has ever happened to them and, in the world, for that matter. Their life story is both interesting and heart wrenching, and not over. I don’t want to give anything away but this movie has unpredictably become one of my favorite movies I’ve seen to date.

The twins are extremely sociable, fun, and smart. It’s a real joy to watch. I 100% recommend this movie.

Pros: An excellent story about amazing people, and very moving.

Cons: N/A

Lost Girls (2020)

Lost Girls (2020)

Trailer

Lost Girls (2020) is a movie based on a true story. A mother is searching for her missing daughter and revisits multiple unsolved cases along the way.

It’s thought-provoking and eery throughout the movie. There are some scenes that put you on the edge of your seat. At the ending of the day, it dials in on the marginalized groups of society and how poorly they are represented during investigations. And above all, how little most care about their stories and outcomes. It’s a heart wrenching true story and a must-see!

Pros: An excellent story with an outcome you might not expect.

Cons: The story is great – but maybe a little slow for some that aren’t inherently interested in movies about crime.

Unabomber: In His Own Words (2020)

Unabomber: In His Own Words (2020)

No trailer out yet!

Unabomber: In His Own Words is a true crime docuseries that can be found on Netflix.

It tells of a national manhunt for Ted Kaczynaski, also known as the Unabomber. He was a genius that went to study at Harvard University at the age of 16. He participated in an experiment there that would now be considered unethical and many believe that caused his downfall.

He graduated and moved to Lincoln, Montana where he isolated himself. He then learned how to create bombs and send them through mail. His goal was to revolt against society in order to revert to a world without industrialization and technology.

Pros: A super interesting story following a sociopathic genius.

Cons: N/A but I wish they talked more about what experiments he took part in.

Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer

Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer

Trailer

Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer (2018) is a limited series documentary produced by Netflix. It isn’t necessarily a movie, but it’s worth a review.

A mysterious video was posted on Youtube in 2010 called “1 boy 2 kittens”. Youtube users expected to open another cute kitten video but what they found was a horrifying video of kittens being killed. Viewers were outraged and conducted an online and amateur manhunt.

The attention that the video received made the man hungrier for fame. Thus, putting out more disturbing videos. Each one more gruesome and evil.

Pros: The docuseries keeps you on your toes with its masterful storytelling.

Cons: N/A but it’s a stressful film to watch.

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (2020)

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (2020)

Trailer

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) is a a stand-alone film of a character introduced in DC Universe’s Suicide Squad (2016). Her film starts post break-up with her longtime boyfriend, The Joker. She has to adapt to life apart from him and without his protection in Gotham City, which proves to be harder and more dangerous than she imagined.

Harley Quinn (HQ) is an eccentric character. Naturally, the movie will feel the same since she is narrating it. The script is witty and the action scenes are phenomenal. The leading ladies had great performances, but Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) stole the show. Which isn’t a bad thing, she’s just brilliant.

The movie bounces back and forth between time as HQ narrates it. It works for the movie, as it’s still easy to follow along. There are some strange animations and one musical number but that flows with her somewhat ~wild~ mind.

If you are wary of seeing this movie, I would go ahead and give it a chance! I know that Suicide Squad may have put a bad taste in your mouth, and the DC Universe the same. But this feels less cheesy and better quality through and through.

Pros: It’s a fun movie with thrill the entire way through. Very entertaining and will not disappoint!

Cons: Some of the fighting scenes are a bit unrealistic. While HQ and her gang were some tough and talented protagonists, it seemed that they were never touched by their foes. Like- not hit even once.

Gretel and Hansel (2020)

Gretel and Hansel (2020)

Trailer

Gretel and Hansel (2020) is a movie based on the Grimm brothers fairytale Hansel and Gretel. The eery fantasy throws a twist in the tale by making Gretel the older and responsible sibling instead of the usually portrayed older brother, Hansel.

When their mother kicks them out of their home, they must embark on a thriller adventure through dark forest and stumble upon a mysterious house filled with delicious looking food. And thus, their adventure ensues.

Everyone probably knows of this tale, but the movie tells it unlike any other film before. The movie is wonderfully dark and artsy – yet lacks any advancing plot. I found myself dozing off in the theater as Gretel peeked around the house while doing chores and Hansel tried to chop down trees. The most thrilling piece of the movie was when Gretel had seemingly real nightmares of the future.

What caught my attention was the movies final moments. To sum it up (without hopefully spoiling the movie), Gretel has a battle with the witch. And after, she sends her brother away as she needs to find herself and cannot do so with him around. She delves into her own darkness and trusts herself to be better than the witch that she defeated. (oops – spoiler!)

Pros: The movie has beautifully mesmerizing visuals

Cons: Terribly boring until the end

Ford vs. Ferrari

Ford vs. Ferrari

Trailer

Ford vs Ferrari (2019) is about, in simplistic terms, Ford company creating the fastest race car and beating out Ferrari. It follows the main character, Ken Miles (Christian Bale) and his personal struggles with himself and racing. It has well known supporting actors Matt Damon (Carroll Shelby) and Caitriona Balfe (Mollie Miles) to name a few.

In all honestly, I simply didn’t enjoy this film as much as I anticipated. It was quite long, 2 hours and 32 minutes exact. The time did not fly by. Additionally, it had a slow start and a lot of boring dialogue.

I felt like the entire movie was either a racing scene or dialogue about racing. Which, you may be thinking, is the whole point. But I didn’t feel a lot of depth from the movie aside from the main character, Ken Miles.

I would say this movie is for car lovers. If you aren’t, then it might not be very entertaining. Many characters lacked depth. I was most excited to see Caitriona Balfe on screen, who has showed that she can hold her own in roles in various tv shows and film. During the majority of the film, she is seen only worrying by the phone or television over her husband. Balfe has only one scene where her characters personality shines – using a regular road as a racetrack in their station wagon while trying to pry the truth out of her husband. Bleh.

I cannot stress this enough – the movie and its dialogue all leads up to racing scenes. Very, very long racing scenes. On the bright side, it has beautiful cinematography!

Pros: It gives a nostalgic feel and is a genuine piece of film.

Cons: Too long and not enough depth.

Rating: 4/10 (yikes)

Bonus: You may love it! I acknowledge that I am apart of the minority that didn’t particularly enjoy the film.
