Gretel and Hansel (2020) is a movie based on the Grimm brothers fairytale Hansel and Gretel. The eery fantasy throws a twist in the tale by making Gretel the older and responsible sibling instead of the usually portrayed older brother, Hansel.
When their mother kicks them out of their home, they must embark on a thriller adventure through dark forest and stumble upon a mysterious house filled with delicious looking food. And thus, their adventure ensues.
Everyone probably knows of this tale, but the movie tells it unlike any other film before. The movie is wonderfully dark and artsy – yet lacks any advancing plot. I found myself dozing off in the theater as Gretel peeked around the house while doing chores and Hansel tried to chop down trees. The most thrilling piece of the movie was when Gretel had seemingly real nightmares of the future.
What caught my attention was the movies final moments. To sum it up (without hopefully spoiling the movie), Gretel has a battle with the witch. And after, she sends her brother away as she needs to find herself and cannot do so with him around. She delves into her own darkness and trusts herself to be better than the witch that she defeated. (oops – spoiler!)
Pros: The movie has beautifully mesmerizing visuals
Cons: Terribly boring until the end
Rating: 2/10
“Where can I find this movie?” In theaters.
I have never seen this movie before, might watch it one day!

You’d think with an original story, Hollywood money and producers, and many renditions, they’d make a better quality movie. Rotten Tomatoes only rated this movie at 15% smh

I haven’t been to the movies in a while and I wouldn’t go see this movie anyway. Even if the plot has a twist, I want original story lines. Thanks for your honesty!

Just another attempt by Hollywood to give beloved properties a dark and gritty edge and rely solely on that without making them interesting.

I like the Grimm versions of fairy tales better, but I don’t think that I will check out this movie.

I’ve been watching the trailers for this movie here and there, and honestly I didn’t seem like it’d be that good.

The ending seems interesting and I’m more curious about Gretel now. However, I don’t think I’ll watch this because I’m not a big horror/suspense movie kind of gal.
